Abstract

The rising concern over gang activities presents a significant challenge, as these groups are often involved in criminal and antisocial behavior that endangers public safety and undermines community well-being. Despite numerous efforts to curb such activities, many communities—especially at the local level—continue to struggle with identifying and implementing effective solutions. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a comprehensive barangay intervention program in reducing gang-related activities in Bagumbong, Caloocan City. A quantitative research design was deemed the most appropriate approach for assessing the effectiveness of a comprehensive barangay intervention program aimed at reducing gang activities in Bagumbong, Caloocan City. Data were collected from 50 respondents, divided into three groups: 40 community residents of Barangay Bagumbong, five barangay officials or volunteers, and five social workers assigned to the area. Structured questionnaires were used to gather information on respondents’ demographic profiles and their perceptions of the program’s impact. The demographic profile of the respondents showed that the majority were aged 18–25, accounting for 50% of the total sample (n = 25). The most pressing concern identified was corruption and collusion with gangs, cited by 82% of respondents as a critical issue. This was followed closely by a lack of community engagement and participation, as well as insufficient resources and funding—both reported by 80% of respondents. These findings reflect the community’s ongoing struggle to address gang-related issues due to limited support and involvement. The study revealed that after-school education programs and community engagement initiatives significantly contributed to reducing gang recruitment and violence. Furthermore, mentorship programs and economic empowerment strategies offered alternative opportunities for at-risk youth. Regular progress tracking and gang activity surveys were also found to be essential in monitoring and evaluating the program’s effectiveness. The study underscores the importance of community-based approaches in preventing gang involvement and promoting public safety. Key recommendations include strengthening family support systems, expanding access to education and employment opportunities, and fostering positive peer relationships. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and local authorities in designing sustainable and effective crime prevention strategies.
