Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) on commuter mobility in Quezon City. The program aims to replace traditional jeepneys with environmentally friendly, safer, and more efficient alternatives, in line with global trends toward sustainable urban transportation. In areas like Quezon City, where jeepneys remain a vital and affordable mode of transport, modernization presents both opportunities and challenges. This research focuses on commuter perceptions and experiences during this transition. A mixed-methods research approach was employed to assess the impact of jeepney modernization on commuter mobility. The study combined both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of commuter behavior and societal implications. Respondents were selected from various age groups and educational levels in Quezon City. Surveys captured statistical trends, while interviews explored deeper insights into commuter experiences. The integration of both methods allowed for a balanced analysis of the transition’s practical and emotional effects. The majority of respondents were female students aged 15–25, predominantly first-year college students. Findings revealed that respondents were generally satisfied with the shift to modernized jeepneys under the PUVMP, citing improvements in comfort, safety, and service features such as air conditioning, CCTV, and handrails. However, respondents also reported challenges during the transition period, with overcrowding being the most common issue. Additionally, the modernization program influenced public perception, encouraging commuters to recognize the long-term benefits of upgraded transport services. Many respondents recommended embracing the changes to improve urban mobility. The study highlights the positive reception of modernized jeepneys among young commuters in Quezon City, particularly in terms of accessibility, affordability, and comfort. Technological upgrades were appreciated, but logistical issues such as overcrowding need to be addressed. The findings suggest that while the PUVMP offers significant improvements, continued efforts in commuter education, infrastructure support, and service optimization are essential to ensure smooth adaptation and sustained public approval.
