Abstract

This study aimed to examine the influence of future orientation (FO) on the resilience of student leaders in overcoming adversity. Although much of the existing research on FO centers on at-risk youth, its relevance extends to other groups—particularly those in leadership roles. Leadership involves setting goals, strategic planning, and effectively responding to challenges. Gaining deeper insights into FO and resilience can help in designing programs that equip student leaders with essential skills for decision-making, sustaining motivation, and managing adversity. A quantitative research design was utilized to assess the relationship between future orientation (FO) and resilience among student leaders. This approach enabled the researchers to statistically determine the strength of the correlation between the two variables. The study employed total population sampling, involving 126 senior high school and college student leaders occupying key leadership roles at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Due to the limited number of eligible participants, all qualified student leaders were included to ensure comprehensive representation. Survey questionnaires were developed by the researchers and validated by licensed psychometricians to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the instruments in measuring FO and resilience. The study revealed that most of the participants were aged 16 to 27, with a slightly higher representation of males. Student leaders demonstrated a strong sense of future orientation and resilience, particularly in areas reflecting goal-directed behavior and personal initiative. However, lower scores were observed in areas related to adaptability when facing unexpected obstacles. The analysis also found a moderate positive correlation between future orientation and resilience, indicating that student leaders with a clear vision for the future are more likely to persist through adversity and stay committed to their long-term goals. Future orientation (FO) and resilience are foundational traits in effective leadership development. FO supports long-term planning, goal-directed behavior, and proactive decision-making, while resilience enables individuals to withstand pressure and recover from setbacks. Given the unique demands placed on student leaders, these traits are especially valuable in helping them manage responsibilities and overcome challenges. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend continued exploration of how FO and resilience can be incorporated into leadership training initiatives to better equip student leaders for sustained growth and success.
