Abstract

The hospitality industry relies on effective housekeeping to deliver high‑quality service, maintain safety standards, and optimize operational efficiency. In Hospitality Management education, on‑the‑job training (OJT) programs integrate practical experiences that bridge theory and industry practice. A dedicated housekeeping laboratory exercise can reinforce learning by allowing students to develop hands‑on skills, understand housekeeping responsibilities, and build the confidence required for professional performance. This study assesses how housekeeping practices support the effectiveness of the OJT program for fourth‑year Hospitality Management students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. A descriptive quantitative design was employed to evaluate the impact of practical housekeeping exercises on student preparedness. Fifty fourth‑year Hospitality Management students participated in the study, selected through purposive sampling to ensure relevance to the research objectives. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire that measured students’ perceptions of skill development, operational efficiency, and readiness for industry standards. The instrument was developed through a literature review of housekeeping training methods and validated for clarity and content. Hands‑on training in housekeeping was found to significantly enhance students’ technical skills, time management, and overall confidence in performing industry tasks. Participants rated their ability to execute cleaning procedures, manage supplies, and comply with safety protocols as markedly improved following laboratory exercises. The data indicated that practical exposure increased alignment with professional benchmarks and contributed to higher self‑reported preparedness for OJT placements. Experiential learning was identified as the most influential factor in boosting employability skills and fostering teamwork. The findings demonstrated that integrating practical housekeeping exercises into the curriculum strengthened the OJT program’s outcomes. As a result, it was recommended that the program emphasize core competencies—such as bed making, surface sanitation, and inventory control—through simulation and guided practice. Additional suggestions included investing in updated laboratory equipment, incorporating continuous performance assessments, and promoting strategies for stress management and professional communication. By addressing identified gaps and providing structured support, the OJT program can better equip students for the demands of the hospitality workforce and contribute to sustained professional development.
