Abstract

Modernizing equipment at the Barangay Commonwealth Fire Substation is crucial for enhancing emergency response capabilities in Quezon City’s densely populated and rapidly urbanizing area. Upgraded firefighting tools and technology, including advanced fire trucks and modern protective gear, ensure quicker and more effective fire suppression. This not only minimizes property damage but also enhances firefighter safety by reducing the risk of injury in hazardous situations. Descriptive quantitative research design aims to systematically gather information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or population. It primarily answers the what, when, where, and how questions related to the research problem, rather than the why. For this study, the researchers used a purposive sampling technique. According to Nikolopoulou (2023), purposive sampling is a non-probability sampling method where units were selected intentionally based on specific characteristics needed in the sample. In other words, participants were chosen “on purpose” to best represent the study’s focus. The respondents consisted of three groups: ten (10) residents, twenty (20) firefighter officers, and twenty (20) volunteer firefighters, totaling fifty (50) respondents, all living in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City. Demographic Profile of Respondents 1.1 Age A significant portion of the respondents (38%) were between the ages of 34 and 41, totaling 19 individuals. The smallest age group was 18 to 25 years old, with only 5 respondents (10%). 1.2 Sex The respondents were predominantly male, comprising 90% (45 individuals), while females accounted for only 10% (5 individuals). 1.3 Educational Attainment College graduates formed the largest educational group, with 22 respondents (44%) indicating they had completed tertiary education. 1.4 Civil Status The majority of the respondents were married, accounting for 78% (39 individuals), while 22% (11 individuals) identified as single. 1.5 Length of Service The highest number of respondents had served for 7–10 years and 14–16 years, with 10 individuals (20%) in each category. The lowest frequency was among those who had served for 17–20 years, with only 5 respondents (10%). Recommendations 1. For Residents: The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) should implement regular fire safety seminars, evacuation drills, and community awareness campaigns. These activities will educate residents on fire prevention measures and proper responses during fire emergencies, thereby enhancing overall safety and preparedness within the community. 2. For Volunteer Firefighters: It is recommended that volunteer firefighters participate in frequent simulation exercises and hands-on training. These sessions will improve their operational readiness and ensure they are capable of effectively using modern firefighting tools and equipment during actual emergencies. 3. For Bureau Firefighters: Professional firefighters under the Bureau of Fire Protection should undergo continuous and updated training programs. These should focus on familiarization with modern firefighting technologies, advanced fire suppression techniques, and updated safety protocols to improve performance and reduce risks during fire response operations.
