Abstract

This study examined Grade 12 senior high school students’ perceptions of student leadership in classroom management at Bestlink College of the Philippines. While student leadership is widely recognized as vital for maintaining a well-structured and effective learning environment, little is known about how students themselves perceive this role within their own school setting. Grade 12 students were surveyed using a questionnaire as part of a descriptive quantitative research design. The questionnaire aimed to assess students’ perceptions of how effectively their student leaders manage classroom behavior, resolve disputes, and foster a supportive learning environment, among other aspects of classroom management. Although the majority of students thought their student leaders did a moderate job of controlling classroom behaviour, there were clear shortcomings in areas like resolving conflicts and encouraging diversity. Most students agreed that student leaders did a good job of upholding discipline, but they also acknowledged that they needed to improve their ability to handle conflicts between classmates. While the effectiveness of student leaders varies with their leadership styles, the study underscores the essential role of student leadership in classroom management. Findings suggest that student leaders could better manage classroom dynamics with increased guidance and support. These insights contribute valuable knowledge about the critical function of student leadership in fostering positive learning environments.
