Abstract

This study examined the relationship between tipping practices, employee motivation, and performance at Pizza Hut SM North. Tips may serve as expressions of customer appreciation and as employee incentives, but irregular or perceived unfair distribution may also create stress. The study focused on service quality, fairness, customer satisfaction, and staff performance. The study used a quantitative descriptive-correlational design. The respondents were 26 purposively selected employees of Pizza Hut SM North who were directly affected by tipping practices. Data were gathered through a four-part survey questionnaire covering demographic profile, tipping practices, staff performance, and challenges and possible improvements. The instrument was reviewed by an adviser, research experts, a grammarian, and a statistician. Frequency and percentage distribution were used to identify response patterns and relationships between tipping practices and employee performance. The findings indicated that tipping was an important source of employee motivation at Pizza Hut–SM North EDSA. Respondents considered fairness and consistency in tip distribution more important than the amount received, emphasizing transparency and equitable sharing. Motivated employees were rated more favorably in service quality, work efficiency, customer relations, and teamwork, with teamwork receiving the highest assessment. The results suggest that a fair tip-pooling system may encourage collaboration and reduce competition among staff. Tipping was viewed as both financial compensation and a form of recognition that supported engagement and attentive customer service. The study recommended a centralized and transparent tip-pooling system supported by written policies, performance feedback, and nonmonetary recognition. Regular training, coaching, evaluation, and employee feedback were also proposed to maintain service standards and help ensure that the system remained fair and supportive of teamwork. These measures may strengthen employee satisfaction, customer loyalty, and organizational performance.
