Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of Mystery Rope as an instructional tool for teaching the sense of touch to Grade 3 pupils at San Bartolome Elementary School in Quezon City. The material was designed to provide an engaging tactile experience that supports sensory awareness and understanding within activity-based and learner-centered science instruction. The study used a quasi-experimental design involving 50 Grade 3 pupils. Pretests and posttests measured knowledge, while a questionnaire assessed motivation, participation, and enjoyment. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, Likert-scale interpretations, weighted mean, ranking, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk tests. The mean score increased from 5.26 on the pretest to 7.60 on the posttest, and the difference was reported as statistically significant. Students also reported greater interest and participation. Minor challenges included limited time and difficulty describing tactile sensations. The researchers recommended clear guidance, links between tactile experiences and real-life contexts, and strategies to maximize participation. The study recommends integrating Mystery Rope into science instruction with clear guidance and real-life applications. The findings suggest that hands-on activities can support science learning and engagement among elementary pupils. The material may also help teachers explain sensory concepts in an accessible and memorable way.
