Effectiveness of Multimedia Flowchart in Teaching Science among Grade 3 Pupils

Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of multimedia flowcharts as an instructional aid in Science classes for Grade 3 pupils at San Agustin Elementary School during the school year 2025–2026, with particular attention to the topic of liquids. The research was anchored on Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Theory, which emphasizes the importance of combining words and visuals to improve comprehension and retention. A total of 256 pupils from nine sections participated in the study. The participants were chosen using simple random sampling to ensure that both male and female learners, and different levels of academic ability, were fairly represented. The research employed a quasi-experimental quantitative design. Data collection included a pretest to measure baseline understanding, structured Science instruction, and a posttest to assess learning progress. The experimental group was taught using multimedia flowcharts, while the control group was exposed to conventional methods such as lectures and textbook discussions. In addition, a validated 15-item survey was administered to capture pupil perceptions of the teaching strategy. The results indicated that multimedia flowcharts were highly effective in supporting learning. Learners reported that the flowcharts sustained their interest, simplified complex science concepts, and encouraged active participation. All survey indicators received composite mean ratings within the “Highly Effective” range. The mean score increased from 5.14 on the pretest, interpreted as low proficiency, to 11.57 on the posttest, interpreted as “Highly Proficient.” The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). The findings indicate that multimedia flowcharts can support learner engagement and academic performance in elementary science. Teachers are encouraged to develop visually guided lessons appropriate for young learners, while school administrators should provide resources for training and instructional materials that support visual learning. Parents may also use flowchart-based materials to extend learning at home. Overall, multimedia flowcharts may foster comprehension, critical thinking, and active participation among Grade 3 pupils.
