Effectiveness of the PlantGrow Model in Learning the Plant System among Grade 4 Pupils

Abstract
This study explored the effectiveness of the PlantGrow Model in enhancing Grade 4 pupils’ learning of the Plant System, particularly the root and shoot systems. The model was developed to make science lessons more interactive, engaging, and easy to understand. Grounded in constructivist learning theory (Kurt, 2021) and aligned with the K–12 Science Curriculum, the study aimed to describe the respondents’ demographic profiles, assess their performance before and after using the model, examine their perceptions of its adaptability and engagement, identify challenges encountered, and determine whether a significant difference existed between pretest and posttest scores. A one-group pretest–posttest design was employed with Grade 4 pupils from Kaligayahan Elementary School. Research instruments included a modified standardized test and a perception survey. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, ranking, weighted mean, descriptive interpretation, tests of normality (Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk), and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Most pupils were 9 years old (93%); 54% were female and 46% were male. The overall weighted mean increased from 7.05 on the pretest, interpreted as low proficiency, to 16.79 on the posttest, interpreted as very high proficiency. The most frequently reported problem was difficulty seeing the PlantGrow Model clearly during the activity (22.34%). Pupils rated the model as “Highly Effective” for engagement, active participation, and lesson adaptability. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Z = -10.361, p < 0.05). The findings indicate that the PlantGrow Model was effective in teaching the root and shoot systems to Grade 4 learners and supported academic performance, participation, and engagement. Lower-ranked areas included exploration, adaptability, participation, and self-expression. To maximize the model’s instructional value, teachers should allow learners to observe and manipulate it, use guided and group activities, and supplement it with real specimens or visual aids when needed.
