Abstract

The demand for smart-home technology has increased interest in assistive solutions for older adults and people who are bedridden or have limited mobility. This study developed a home-convenience robot using an ESP32, MIT App Inventor, Internet of Things connectivity, and television and fan controls. The system was intended to allow users to operate selected household appliances through a mobile application and voice commands. The study used an experimental prototyping method to design, construct, and evaluate the system. The prototype integrated an ESP32 microcontroller, relay modules, DC motors, linear actuators, an infrared transmitter, and a Wi-Fi-based mobile application developed with MIT App Inventor. Hardware and software tests examined responsiveness, connectivity, mobility, appliance-control accuracy, and power distribution. A descriptive survey questionnaire was also administered to 50 purposively selected respondents to assess functionality, reliability, safety, portability, sustainability, and economy. The prototype controlled the television and fan through the mobile application and voice commands. Hardware testing reportedly indicated stable power delivery, relay switching, and consistent command responses. Respondents provided favorable feedback regarding functionality, convenience, and reliability. The findings indicate that the ESP32-based prototype could perform the selected appliance-control functions under the test conditions. Reported limitations included dependence on Wi-Fi, component weight, and restricted navigation. The study did not directly measure independence, caregiver burden, comfort, or quality of life among older adults or bedridden users; therefore, claims regarding these outcomes should be treated as intended benefits rather than demonstrated effects.
