Abstract

Student leaders are expected to maintain discipline and responsibility while meeting academic demands, which may create role overload. This study examined the association between role overload and academic performance among criminology student mayors at Bestlink College of the Philippines. A descriptive-correlational design was used with a researcher-made survey questionnaire. A total of 101 criminology student mayors from the second to fourth year participated. The Kruskal–Wallis H test was used to examine differences or associations involving role overload and academic performance; the specific grouping variable should be clarified. Conflict management received the highest role-overload rating (weighted mean = 3.21, “fairly high”), followed by administrative duties (weighted mean = 2.55, “fairly high”) and academic-related representation (weighted mean = 2.47, “fairly low”). Academic performance was rated at a weighted mean of 1.91 (“fairly high”). The Kruskal–Wallis result was not significant (H = 3.57, p = 0.31), indicating no evidence of a relationship or group difference as operationalized in the study. The respondents reported managing both leadership and academic responsibilities while maintaining good academic standing. The nonsignificant result does not show that role overload improves time management, responsibility, or resilience; those explanations are speculative and would require separate evidence. The study should clarify the Kruskal–Wallis grouping variable and use a correlation or regression method if the intended question concerns an association between continuous scores.
