Effectiveness of Pop-Up Book Media in Teaching Continental Drift in Earth and Space Science among Grade 10 Students of Camarin High School

Abstract

Science education requires effective strategies that help students understand abstract concepts and develop deeper comprehension. In junior high school, particularly in Earth and Space Science, learners often struggle to visualize processes like Continental Drift, resulting in low engagement and limited mastery. Interactive Pop-Up Book Media offers a creative solution by combining text, visuals, and three-dimensional elements to transform complex lessons into engaging learning experiences. Through tactile and visual interaction, students can better grasp scientific ideas and participate more actively in class. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effectiveness of Interactive Pop-Up Book Media in teaching Continental Drift among Grade 10 Earth and Space Science students at Camarin High School. This design is appropriate for identifying the impact of an instructional intervention without random assignment, allowing researchers to compare the performance of students exposed to the Pop-Up Book Media and those taught using traditional methods. It focuses on evaluating differences in students’ academic performance, engagement, and conceptual understanding before and after the intervention, thereby assessing the instructional effectiveness of the interactive material in enhancing learning outcomes. Interactive Pop-Up Book Media was associated with improved understanding of Continental Drift among Grade 10 students, with the mean score increasing from 10.90 on the pretest to 21.40 on the posttest. Students reported high engagement with the 3D visuals and interactive elements and adapted readily to the pop-up-book format, supporting participation and conceptual comprehension. The findings indicate that pop-up-book media supported students’ academic performance and comprehension in Earth and Space Science. The material’s interactive and three-dimensional features helped present scientific ideas in a more accessible form. Proper classroom integration, teacher guidance, and institutional support are recommended to maximize its benefits and encourage critical thinking and active participation.
