Abstract

This study examined TeliPinas as a supplementary geography-learning material for first-year Social Studies majors. It focused on whether the tool could support cartographic skills, spatial awareness, map reading, mental-map construction, and understanding of places and landscapes. The study described an experimental design and purposively selected 26 first-year Social Studies majors. Data were gathered through a survey-based evaluation of TeliPinas. Most participants were aged 18 years or younger (54%) and female (54%), while males comprised 46%; a further 35% were aged 19–23 years. Respondents reported that TeliPinas helped them identify regions (mean = 3.54), construct mental images and interpret maps (mean = 3.38), identify places within regions (mean = 3.31), and remember landscapes and tourist destinations. They also reported that it helped them describe relative regional positions (mean = 3.54), simplify complex areas (mean = 3.46), create accurate labels (mean = 3.42), interpret map colors and symbols (mean = 3.38), and compare representations with real-world locations (mean = 3.35). The survey findings indicate favorable student perceptions of TeliPinas as a geography-learning material, particularly for map reading and spatial understanding. Because the reported evidence is perceptual and no experimental comparison or objective learning measure is described, the study cannot establish an effect on academic performance. Further evaluation should include clearly specified performance outcomes and comparative or pretest–posttest data.
