Effectiveness of Infinity Trial in Mastering Indefinite Integral Calculus among Third Year Mathematics Majors

Abstract
Indefinite integral calculus is a fundamental but challenging area of higher mathematics because of its abstract concepts and complex problem-solving requirements. Traditional approaches such as lectures and textbooks may not address diverse learning needs, which can lead to gaps in comprehension and performance. To address these challenges, Infinity Trial, a technology-assisted instructional approach, was introduced to support mastery of indefinite integral calculus among third-year Mathematics majors at Bestlink College of the Philippines. It provides step-by-step guidance, visual explanations, and immediate feedback, allowing students to learn independently and practice continuously. The study evaluated the effectiveness of Infinity Trial in improving students’ understanding and achievement in indefinite integral calculus. An experimental design involved 88 third-year Mathematics majors from BSED sections 31001 and 31002. Data were collected using a validated survey questionnaire and pretest and posttest assessments that measured performance, perceptions, and encountered challenges. Frequency and percentage distributions, weighted mean, standard deviation, t-test, and ranking were used in the analysis. Before the intervention, students demonstrated low proficiency in indefinite integral calculus, with a pretest mean score of 10.88. After the implementation of Infinity Trial, the posttest mean increased to 21.20. The t-test result (t = 25.37, p = .00001 < 0.05) indicated a statistically significant improvement in performance. Learners also reported positive perceptions of Infinity Trial in terms of intrinsic load (3.66), extraneous load (3.58), and germane load (3.54), suggesting that the approach supported motivation, engagement, and critical thinking. Reported challenges included unnecessary noise (19%), limited problem-solving skills (13%), and poor concentration (12%), while lack of interest (6%) was the least frequently reported issue. Overall, the findings indicate that Infinity Trial improved students’ understanding and performance in indefinite integral calculus. Its integration into mathematics instruction may provide an innovative strategy for fostering engagement and supporting learning outcomes in higher education.
