Abstract

Leadership style is significantly associated with employee engagement in healthcare organizations, with supportive leadership practices linked to motivation, satisfaction, commitment, and performance. Healthcare employees work in demanding environments in which leadership support is associated with morale, productivity, and quality patient care. Effective leadership practices are associated with trust, collaboration, and efficient performance, whereas ineffective leadership is associated with disengagement, low motivation, reduced effectiveness, and higher turnover. Understanding this relationship is essential for sustaining a productive work environment. This study assessed the relationship between leadership styles and employee engagement among healthcare employees at Novaliches District Hospital. A quantitative descriptive-correlational design was used. Data were collected from 50 healthcare employees through purposive sampling using a validated questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Pearson product-moment correlation were applied. Results showed transformational leadership was most positively perceived, followed by democratic and transactional styles, while autocratic and laissez-faire were least favored. Employees showed moderate to high engagement, with strong commitment and motivation but moderate satisfaction and involvement. A strong significant positive relationship was found (r = 0.812, p = 0.009). The findings indicate that transformational leadership is positively associated with employee engagement. A Leadership and Engagement Enhancement Program was proposed to help leaders strengthen practices and support employee motivation and organizational outcomes. These results provide practical guidance for hospital administrators in developing leadership strategies that foster supportive supervision, strengthen employee commitment, and improve overall workforce stability, service quality, and long-term organizational effectiveness.
