Abstract

Fire safety is an important concern in densely populated communities, especially in areas where housing is unstable and made from flammable materials. Barangay Payatas in Quezon City is one of the most crowded barangays in Metro Manila, with narrow pathways and limited access to water and firefighting equipment. These conditions increase the risk of fire incidents, which can cause serious damage to property and endanger lives. To address this, fire volunteers conduct fire safety awareness programs to teach residents how to prevent fires, respond during emergencies, and protect their households. This study assessed the effectiveness of these programs in improving the knowledge. Attitudes, and practices of residents regarding fire safety. The study used a descriptive research design with 40 respondents, including fire volunteers, barangay officials, and residents. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation checklists focusing on awareness campaigns, resource availability, and fire safety practices. The analysis assessed residents' knowledge retention, confidence in using equipment, application of preventive measures, and the influence of personal and environmental factors on participation. The findings showed that the fire safety awareness programs effectively improved residents' knowledge of fire hazards and emergency response. Most participants could identify common fire causes, properly use fire extinguishers, and explain safe evacuation procedures. Small-group hands-on training and drills enhanced active participation and skill development. However, limited resources and lack of confidence affected some residents' engagement. The study emphasized the need for continuous training, adequate resources, and regular practice to ensure full preparedness. In conclusion, the fire safety awareness program in Barangay Payatas positively improved the community's preparedness to prevent and respond to fires. The study recommends strengthening the initiative through regular hands-on drills, improved resource allocation, and greater resident participation. By enhancing knowledge, building confidence, and promoting proper safety practices, the program helped reduce fire risks and support community welfare. Continued collaboration between barangay officials and local fire authorities, along with regular evaluations, will ensure the program remains effective, sustainable, and responsive to the community's needs.
