Abstract

This study, “The Impact of Petty Crimes in Barangay Novaliches Proper: Basis for Local Crime Prevention Strategies,” analyzes the effects of minor offenses like theft, vandalism, public disturbance, and similar offenses. These crimes though considered less serious, can significantly impact community trust, economic stability, and residents' sense of safety. Frequent incidents can lead to fear, discomfort, and hesitation in participating in daily activities. Some residents may also feel worried when going outside their homes, especially at night. This research determines the causes, occurrences, and social and economic effects of petty crimes, providing useful information for barangay leaders, authorities and community members to develop effective strategies to reduce or prevent these crimes and improve community safety. The study used a descriptive quantitative design, with 50 respondents comprising 10 PNP personnel, 10 barangay officials, 10 Task Force Disiplina members, and 20 residents, selected via purposive sampling. The respondents were chosen because they are familiar with the situation of petty crimes in the community. Data were gathered using a structured survey questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and ranking. Findings showed petty crimes have a very high impact, causing fear, stress, frustration, and emotional distress. Many residents reported feeling unsafe in certain areas of the barangay. They weaken community trust, discourage participation in programs, and lead to financial losses, property damage, and decreased safety. Some victims also experience inconvenience when replacing or repairing damaged property. These crimes affect residents' daily lives and overall well-being, creating a sense of insecurity and discomfort among community members. The study suggests petty crimes should not be ignored, as they can disrupt peace and order. Strengthening cooperation between residents, officials, and law enforcement is essential. Effective crime prevention strategies, monitoring, awareness campaigns, and coordination can reduce petty crimes. Encouraging residents to report incidents and participate in safety programs can improve authorities response and maintain a safer environment in Barangay Novaliches Proper, ensuring a secure and thriving community for residents. Regular community engagement and proactive measures can help prevent petty crimes and promote a safer environment.
