Abstract

Barangay tanods play an important role in maintaining peace and order in barangay level by serving as the first line of defense against criminal activities. In urban communities such as Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City, the occurrence of crimes including theft, robbery, vandalism, physical injuries, public disturbances, illegal gambling, and drug-related activities highlights the need to assess the efficiency of barangay tanod deployment. This study was conducted to determine the efficiency of barangay tanod deployment in preventing criminal activities with a goal of contributing in the improvement of community-based crime prevention program at the barangay levels. The study specifically aimed to assess the efficiency of barangay tanod deployment in terms of manpower, resources, and training. A quantitative descriptive research design was used involving a total of eighty (80) respondents, consisting of fifty (50) residents and thirty (30) barangay tanods selected through random sampling. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire covering demographic profile and performance indicators. Statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, weighted mean, ranking, and the Mann-Whitney U Test were applied to analyze and interpret the data and determine significant differences between the groups. Majority of the respondents were aged fifty one (51) years old and above, mostly male, with college-level education, and a long-term residents of over ten (10) years. The respondents assessment favors the indicators about the efficiency of barangay tanods in terms of manpower, resources, and training. However, the Mann-Whitney U Test showed significant differences between residents and barangay tanods across all variables, resulting in the rejection of null hypothesis. The barangay tanods in Barangay Commonwealth are generally efficient in preventing criminal activities, as reflected in the positive assessment of manpower, resources, and training. The findings also revealed that the most problem encountered by the respondents in preventing criminal activities is the "Insufficient number of tanods to cover all areas, leading to delayed response to incidents". The “Bantay Commonwealth. Strengthening Manpower, Resources, and Training for safer communities” campaign program was proposed to further improve the Efficiency of Barangay Tanod Deployment in Preventing Criminal Activities in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.
