Abstract

This study examines the Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit's (TMRU) impact on crime deterrence in Barangay Masambong, Quezon City. Created to improve police response in crowded areas, the TMRU's visibility aims to discourage crime. The research assesses the unit's effectiveness in fast response, security implementation, and street crime prevention, gathering insights from residents, TMRU personnel, and barangay officials. It also identifies challenges faced by the TMRU and suggests improvements. The findings will inform law enforcement and local government strategies for enhancing public safety through motorcycle patrol units. This study used a descriptive, quantitative approach to assess the TMRU's deterrent effect in Barangay Masambong. 80participants were selected via purposive sampling: 45 residents, 25 TMRU personnel, and 10 barangay officials. Data were collected using a validated self-made questionnaire covering demographics, deterrent power assessment, and problems encountered. Analysis involved frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and the Kruskal-Wallis H-test to identify differences among groups. A Likert scale measured responses, ensuring organized, measurable, and statistically interpreted findings on the TMRU's impact. The study found the TMRU highly effective, with respondents (mostly young to middle-aged, single males with high school education) strongly agreeing on its fast response, effective patrols, and success in reducing street crime. The community appreciated the TMRU's visibility and proactive security measures. A Kruskal-Wallis H-test showed consistent positive perceptions across residents, TMRU personnel, and officials. However, the study identified challenges, including understaffing, limited motorcycles, and coordination problems, that could hinder the TMRU's performance. The study indicates the TMRU is perceived as effective in maintaining peace in Barangay Masambong, with strong agreement on fast response, security implementation, and street crime prevention. This supports deterrence theory, highlighting the importance of visible, swift law enforcement. Consistent perceptions across residents, officers, and officials strengthen the findings' reliability. Despite this, challenges like understaffing, limited motorcycles, and coordination issues were identified. Addressing these through recruitment, better deployment, more equipment, and improved coordination could further enhance the TMRU's effectiveness and impact on community safety.
