Abstract
This study proposes an evacuation center with essential amenities in Barangay Sta. Cruz, San Pascual, Burias Island, addressing the Philippines’ vulnerability to frequent natural disasters. Using a descriptive research design, the project evaluated the design’s acceptability focusing on floor plan, materials, aesthetics, durability, and presentation, through assessments by five civil engineers and five architects. Grounded in evacuation theory and disaster resilience literature, the study highlights the need for functional, sustainable, and durable emergency shelters. The findings aim to enhance disaster preparedness and provide a blueprint for facilities that protect the safety and dignity of displaced families while strengthening community resilience. This study used a quantitative descriptive design to evaluate a proposed evacuation center. Ten professionals (five civil engineers and five architects) assessed its acceptability in terms of floor plan, materials, efficiency, durability, and presentation using a validated survey. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, weighted mean, and t-test, with results intended to support a functional and structurally acceptable design. This study evaluated the acceptability of a proposed evacuation center model in Burias Island as assessed by five civil engineers and five architects. The floor plan, materials, durability, and presentation were rated Highly Acceptable, while aesthetics was Acceptable, resulting in an overall mean of 3.50. No significant difference was found between the two groups’ assessments. Minor improvements in finishing, aesthetics, and layout were recommended. Overall, the design is functional and suitable for disaster response with slight enhancements needed. This study found the proposed evacuation center highly acceptable, with civil engineers and architects agreeing on the quality of its floor plan, materials, and durability. Although aesthetics were rated slightly lower, suggesting minor refinements, statistical analysis confirmed professional consensus on the design's suitability. Initial concerns regarding structural accuracy and finishing were resolved through corrective enhancements, resulting in a functional design ready for implementation with recommendations for final structural and aesthetic polishing.
