Abstract

Barangay Tanods play an essential role in maintaining peace, order, and safety at the community level. Despite their importance as frontliners, their safety during patrol activities often receives limited attention. This study focused on examining the significance of Barangay Tanod safety in Barangay 178, Camarin, Caloocan City. It aimed to understand how factors such as area of assignment, patrol schedules, and availability of protective resources influence their safety and effectiveness, while also identifying challenges encountered during patrol duties. The study employed a quantitative descriptive research design. Data were gathered from forty (40) respondents comprising Barangay Tanods and community citizens using a structured survey questionnaire. Statistical tools, including frequency distribution and weighted mean, were utilized to analyze perceptions of safety, working conditions, and operational challenges. This approach allowed for objective measurement of responses and identification of key safety-related patterns. Findings showed that patrol conditions were generally viewed as safe, with strong confidence in area assignments and patrol schedules. However, protective resources were rated lower, indicating equipment limitations. Most tanods had several years of service, reflecting substantial experience. Although safety perceptions were positive, the study identified critical gaps, particularly in training and preparedness. Limited training opportunities may affect tanods’ confidence, decision-making, and response effectiveness during patrol operations. The results highlight that ensuring tanod safety requires not only adequate equipment but also continuous skills development and institutional support. Strengthening these areas can improve patrol performance, enhance community trust, and promote overall public safety.
