Bedtime Screen Use as a Coping Mechanism and Its Effects on the Sleep Quality of First-Year Psychology Students at Bestlink College of the Philippines

Abstract

Excessive use of mobile phones during bedtime can negatively affect sleep. Prolonged nighttime screen exposure has been found to disrupt sleep patterns and increase the risk of sleep difficulties. Activities such as social media browsing, gaming, and video streaming may provide temporary emotional relief but are associated with later bedtimes, shorter sleep duration, and longer sleep onset latency. The study employed a descriptive correlational research design to determine the extent of bedtime screen use and its relationship with sleep quality. Data were gathered from 190 first-year psychology students using a structured questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed that the majority of respondents engaged in bedtime screen use for more than two hours, and the most common sleep duration ranged from 5 to 6 hours, indicating insufficient sleep. The Shapiro-Wilk test showed that the data were not normally distributed. Thus, Spearman's rho was used to determine the relationship between bedtime screen use as a coping mechanism and sleep quality. Mobile phones were identified as the most commonly used device during bedtime. Interactive screen activities ranked highest, engaging primarily in social media browsing and messaging, while passive activities such as watching videos or movies were also prevalent. The findings indicate that increased bedtime screen use is associated with poorer sleep outcomes. The results showed that most respondents engaged in bedtime screen use for more than two hours, while the most common reported sleep duration ranged from five to six hours, indicating insufficient sleep. Mobile phones were identified as the primary device used during bedtime. Interactive screen activities ranked highest, particularly social media browsing and messaging, although passive activities such as watching videos or movies were also prevalent among the participants.
