Abstract
This study investigated the influence of Gen Z Pinoy humor on social belongingness among Psychology students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Guided by Affiliative Humor Theory, the research examined the levels of Pinoy humor, specifically kanal and aircon humor, the level of social belongingness, and the relationship between these variables. A descriptive-correlational research design was utilized. The respondents consisted of 328 Psychology students selected through disproportionate stratified sampling. Data were collected using a self-made questionnaire validated by registered psychometricians. Statistical analyses included frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean, ranking, Shapiro–Wilk test of normality, and Spearman’s rho correlation. Results revealed that respondents exhibited a high level of social belongingness, indicating that humor plays an important role in fostering peer connection and inclusion. Kanal humor was found to be more prevalent than aircon humor among the respondents. Correlation analysis showed a statistically significant but weak positive relationship between overall Gen Z Pinoy humor and social belongingness. Specifically, kanal humor demonstrated a significant relationship with social belongingness, while aircon humor showed no significant association. The findings suggest that Gen Z Pinoy humor, particularly kanal humor, contributes to students’ sense of belonging by strengthening social interaction and shared experiences. The study recommends the integration of appropriate humor-based activities in academic and student-centered programs to promote inclusivity and peer bonding.
