Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between conflict resolution levels and leadership competencies among 45 BS Psychology Class Mayors at Bestlink College of the Philippines, emphasizing these skills' importance for their future professional careers. A quantitative research approach utilized the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Management Styles Assessment and the Student Leadership Behavior Scale to survey first to fourth-year, regular and octoberian student leaders. Most respondents were aged 20–21 (47%) and female (71%). Mayors predominantly utilized collaboration (M = 3.62), compromising (M = 3.06), and accommodating (M = 3.03). Significant positive correlations were identified between conflict resolution and people-oriented support (r = 0.47, p = 0.001), goal management (r = 0.41, p = 0.01), and task-oriented support (r = 0.40, p = 0.01). Conversely, taking initiative and sharing goals yielded no significant relationship. While a general positive relationship exists, certain leadership behaviors are more intrinsically linked to effective conflict resolution than others. The researchers recommend incorporating these findings into leadership enhancement programs to better prepare student leaders for school-based dispute management.
