Abstract

Social media has become a significant platform for sharing information, including crime-related incidents, particularly in urban communities such as Payatas, Quezon City. This study examined the impact of social media posts on crime reporting and public perception in Payatas, focusing on its influence on the media agenda, public agenda, and policy agenda. It aimed to determine the demographic profile of respondents in terms of age, civil status, educational attainment, and socioeconomic status assess the influence of social media on crime reporting identify significant differences in perception when grouped according to demographic variables and determine the problems. This study employed a quantitative descriptive research design using a structured questionnaire as the primary data-gathering instrument. A total of sixty (60) respondents participated, consisting of fifty (50) residents and ten (10) barangay officials from Payatas, Quezon City. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who actively use social media and are knowledgeable about crime reporting. Statistical tools such as frequency distribution, percentage, weighted mean, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze and interpret data. Findings revealed that the majority of respondents were aged 18–24, single, college graduates, and belonging to the middle class. The overall assessment indicated that social media significantly influences crime reporting and public perception. In terms of media agenda, respondents strongly agreed that social media provides important crime-related information and increases awareness of incidents. Regarding public agenda, social media heightened community concern and encouraged discussions on crime and safety. In terms of policy agenda, social media posts were perceived to pressure authorities to respond promptly to reported incidents. The study concluded that social media plays a crucial role in shaping crime awareness, influencing public perception, and affecting institutional responses to crime in Payatas, Quezon City. While it serves as an effective tool for rapid information dissemination and community engagement, its misuse and lack of verification may contribute to misinformation and fear. Therefore, it is recommended that local authorities, social media users, and community leaders promote responsible use of social media, implement verification mechanisms, and strengthen coordination between the community and law enforcement.
