Abstract

This criminological research, titled “The Role of Bureau of Fire Protection in the Fire Safety Awareness Program in Commonwealth, Quezon City,” was conducted due to the increase in fire incidents from 19 cases in 2024 to 24 cases from January to September 2025, highlighting the need to assess existing fire safety efforts. The study aimed to determine the role of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in promoting fire safety awareness programs in Commonwealth in terms of fire education, fire prevention, fire brigade readiness, challenges encountered, and proposed improvements. The study used a descriptive research design and stratified random sampling, involving 49 respondents comprising BFP officers, fire volunteers, and residents. Data were gathered through survey questionnaires in English and Filipino, with digital copies available for accessibility. Responses were organized, coded, and statistically analyzed to ensure accuracy and reliability. Results showed that respondents strongly recognized the BFP’s effectiveness in key areas. The highest-ranked fire education indicator emphasized understanding the correct use of fire extinguishers for kitchen fires. In fire prevention, respondents agreed that BFP programs helped identify fire hazards and trained brigades to detect risks. For fire brigade readiness, the top indicator was monitoring equipment maintenance compliance. The most significant challenge was weather disruptions affecting outdoor awareness activities (24.6%). Likewise, the top recommendation was conducting activities in alternative indoor venues or establishing contingency plans during bad weather (24.6%). The study recommended strengthening fire safety education through coordinated efforts among the BFP, fire brigades, volunteers, LGUs, and communities. Priority was given to training on electrical and kitchen fire hazards, proper extinguisher use, increased participation, institutionalized indoor venues, contingency planning, funding support, and adoption of digital or hybrid awareness programs. Future researchers were encouraged to expand the study using broader and comparative designs.
