Abstract

Community-based crime prevention is essential in maintaining peace and order at the barangay level. The Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) plays a crucial role in assisting law enforcement; however, limited studies have examined how BPATs directly implement crime prevention programs such as patrolling, school safety, and apprehension of violators. Existing research focuses more on general effectiveness rather than operational challenges and program implementation. This gap highlights the need to evaluate BPAT performance in a specific local context. This study aimed to assess the role of BPAT in Barangay Vasra, Quezon City, making it a timely contribution to improving grassroots crime prevention strategies. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed in this study. Data were collected through a structured survey questionnaire administered to 80 respondents, including barangay residents, BPAT members, and barangay officials. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The data gathered were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and the Kruskal–Wallis H-test to determine differences in respondents’ assessments. Findings revealed that BPATs play a significant role in crime prevention through regular patrolling, school safety initiatives, and apprehension of violators. Respondents generally expressed strong agreement regarding BPAT effectiveness. However, significant differences were found in patrolling and school safety programs, while no significant difference was observed in arresting violators. Major challenges identified include limited training, lack of equipment, safety risks, and insufficient legal knowledge, which affect operational performance. The study confirms that BPATs are vital in maintaining community safety but require stronger institutional support. The findings align with existing research emphasizing training and resource needs. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and a single study area. Future research may explore broader settings and long-term policy improvements.
