Abstract

Crime prevention remains a challenge in densely populated communities. In the Philippines, barangay tanods act as frontline security personnel whose visibility helps deter crime. However, petty crimes still persist in some areas. This study evaluates the effectiveness of barangay tanod visibility in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon, Quezon City, and identifies ways to improve community-based law enforcement. This study used a descriptive research design to evaluate the effectiveness of barangay tanod visibility in crime prevention in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon, Quezon City. A quantitative approach was employed through the use of a self-made survey questionnaire distributed to selected residents, barangay tanods, and barangay officials. Convenience and quota sampling techniques were applied to ensure representation among respondents. Data gathered were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and weighted mean to interpret the perceptions of participants regarding deployment strategy, manpower, public trust and confidence, and deterrence. The results of the study revealed that barangay tanod visibility has a significant impact on crime prevention in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon, Quezon City. Respondents generally agreed that consistent patrol presence and strategic deployment contribute to the reduction of petty crimes and disturbances. The findings also showed that adequate manpower and proper scheduling enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of tanods. Moreover, increased visibility was associated with higher levels of public trust and confidence, as residents feel safer and more secure. However, challenges such as limited resources, insufficient training, and manpower shortages were identified as factors that affect overall effectiveness. The findings show that the visibility of barangay tanods contributes to maintaining peace and order in the community. Regular patrols and strategic deployment help discourage minor crimes and disturbances, as offenders may feel a higher risk of being caught. The results also indicate that sufficient manpower and organized scheduling improve the effectiveness of tanods in responding to incidents. However, some challenges such as limited resources and lack of training may affect their overall performance. These findings suggest that improving support, training, and coordination can further strengthen the role of barangay tanods in crime prevention.
