Abstract

Maintaining peace and order is one of the primary duties of leaders in every barangay. In Barangay 178, Camarin, Caloocan City, one of the most crowded areas in Metro Manila, the role of barangay officials becomes even more vital due to the increasing challenges in community safety, crime prevention, and social discipline. A quantitative approach was used for this study through the utilization of descriptive design. Data gathering procedure was conducted among the respondents, comprising fifty (50) in total, from the thirty (30) barangay officials and twenty (20) community residents through utilization of a validated self-made survey questionnaire under closed-ended questions. The statistical tools that are used are frequency and percentage, weighted mean, four-point scale, Mann–Whitney U test, and ranking. The findings indicated that on average of the effectiveness of leadership in terms of autocratic with overall weighted mean of 2.64 interpreted as "Agree", democratic with overall weighted mean of 3.30 interpreted as "Strongly agree", laissez-faire with overall weighted mean of 3.10 interpreted as "Agree", transformational with overall weighted mean of 3.10 interpreted as "Agree" and transactional with overall weighted mean of 3.26 interpreted as "Strongly agree". However, it was noted that the results from the Mann–Whitney U test indicated there is no significant difference among the perception of the two groups of respondents, and thus the null hypothesis was failed to reject. The result showed that different leadership styles are effective yet, financial support to promote programs in sustaining peace and order are also important. The implication of the research suggests that the barangay officials should advocate for higher budget allocations and strengthen the relationship with NGOs to prevent financial constraints.
