Abstract

The primary focus of this study is the causes of Carnapping Incidents involving Motorcycles in Barangay 176-E, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City. The study aimed to identify common reasons of motorcycle theft, comprehend police officers' and motorcycle owners' perspectives, and provide workable ways to lessen these incidences in the community. Urban communities are becoming increasingly concerned about motorcycle carnapping, particularly in heavily populated regions where security measures may be inadequate. Motorcycles are particularly susceptible to theft because of their accessibility and mobility, while being a popular and reasonably priced mode of transportation and income. A quantitative descriptive research strategy was used in the study to systematically collect and examine data regarding the issue. Thirty (30) motorcycle owners who lived in the barangay and twenty (20) police officers from the Philippine National Police made up the fifty (50) participants in the study. To guarantee consistency and dependability in responses, a structured survey questionnaire was used as the main instrument for collecting data. To assess the data gathered and determine the most important contributing factors to motorcycle carnapping, statistical techniques like weighted mean, distribution of frequencies, percentage, and ranking were applied. The results showed that among the main reasons for motorcycle theft events were insufficient street lighting and poor visibility in particular areas. Insufficiently well-lit parking lots and dark streets give criminals the chance to carry out their crimes undetected. Socioeconomic problems like unemployment and poverty were also found to be significant contributing variables since they may encourage some people to engage in criminal activity. Additionally, it was discovered that some regions were more susceptible to Carnapping events due to a lack of visible police presence and limited patrol operations. The study suggests enhancing street lighting, creating safe and designated parking spaces, increasing police patrol personnel visibility, and supporting neighborhood-based efforts to prevent crime in light of these findings. Increased supervision of motorcycle purchases and ownership transfers is another recommendation. These steps can greatly improve safety and lessen the number of motorcycle carnapping events in the neighbourhood when law enforcement, local government, and residents work together.
