Abstract

This study examined the impact of nighttime barangay tanod patrols on community safety in Barangay Batasan Hills, Quezon City. Guided by Routine Activity Theory, it considered patrol visibility, training, and resources as factors that may influence patrol effectiveness. The study also recognized challenges related to limited training, inadequate equipment, and insufficient organizational support. The study used a descriptive survey design. A total of 80 respondents—10 barangay officials, 30 barangay tanod or Barangay Public Safety Officers, and 40 residents—were selected through simple random sampling. A validated questionnaire gathered data on patrol visibility, training, resources, and encountered problems. Percentage, weighted mean, a Likert scale, and the Kruskal–Wallis H-test were used to analyze the data and determine differences among respondent groups. Findings show that most respondents were male, aged 26–33, high school graduates, and residents for more than 10 years. Patrol visibility (WM=3.54), training (WM=3.41), and resources (WM=3.38) were all rated “Strongly Agree.” However, significant differences existed among residents, tanods, and officials (p<0.05). Key problems included communication issues, lack of proper gear, insufficient training, fatigue, and limited transportation. An enhancement program was proposed to address these concerns. The study concludes that while nighttime patrols are generally perceived as effective, improvements are needed in communication systems, refresher training, equipment provision, scheduling, and resident awareness. Statistically significant differences among groups confirm varying perceptions. Recommendations include strengthening patrol monitoring, upgrading gear, conducting regular training, increasing community engagement, and encouraging future research to further improve barangay-level public safety.
