Abstract
This study investigates the effects of noise pollution caused by karaoke activities and examines its role in triggering community conflicts in Barangay San Agustin, Novaliches. Karaoke, while commonly used for recreation and social gatherings, has become a frequent source of disturbance within the community when used excessively or without proper regulation. The research focuses on assessing the psychological effects of noise pollution, such as stress, irritation, and mental fatigue, as well as health-related concerns including sleep deprivation and residents’ perceived experiences of hormonal imbalance. These effects are considered significant because they may influence individuals’ behavior, emotional stability, and interpersonal relationships within the barangay. The study included thirty-two respondents consisting of barangay lupon members, complainants, community residents, and police representatives to gather different perspectives on karaoke-related noise issues. Data were collected using a structured survey questionnaire that measured the frequency of noise exposure, its psychological and health effects, and the occurrence of community conflicts. The survey also assessed respondents’ awareness of barangay ordinances regulating karaoke use. The gathered data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, weighted mean, and correlation analysis to examine the relationship between noise pollution and community conflict. The preliminary findings indicate that frequent and loud karaoke activities significantly affect residents’ emotional well-being and sleep quality. Respondents reported increased levels of stress, irritability, and fatigue due to excessive noise, particularly during nighttime hours. These disturbances were found to contribute to tension among neighbors, leading to complaints, misunderstandings, and in some cases formal disputes brought before barangay authorities. The findings show that karaoke-related noise pollution can negatively affect residents’ mental and physical well-being, which may lead to tensions and conflicts among neighbors. The study also emphasizes the need for better awareness and enforcement of barangay regulations on karaoke use. Strengthening these policies may help reduce disturbances and promote a more peaceful community.
