Abstract

This study, “An Assessment of Traffic Violation Among Motorcycle Riders in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City, ” examined the factors influencing traffic violations among motorcycle riders along Commonwealth Avenue, one of the busiest and most accident-prone roads in Quezon City. Anchored on the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Social Ecological Model, the research investigated the relationship between riders’ demographic profile, level of awareness of traffic laws enforced by the Land Transportation Office and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, environmental and enforcement factors, and the frequency of traffic violations. A quantitative descriptive-correlational design was employed using a self-constructed survey questionnaire distributed through convenience sampling to 150 motorcycle riders residing in Barangay Commonwealth. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean, Chi-square Test of Independence, and Spearman Rank Correlation. Results showed that most respondents were young adult males aged 18–25, with 1–4 years of driving experience and primarily using motorcycles for personal transportation. The overall frequency of self-reported traffic violations was low (GWM = 1.26, “Never”), indicating high claimed compliance. Respondents demonstrated moderate awareness of traffic laws (GWM = 2.98, “Agree”), although misconceptions regarding helmet requirements and licensing were identified. No significant relationship was found between demographic characteristics and violation frequency (p > 0.05). However, awareness showed a significant negative correlation with violations (ρ = -0.412, p < 0.05), while environmental and enforcement factors showed a significant positive correlation (ρ = 0.368, p < 0.05). The findings highlight the importance of education, consistent enforcement, and infrastructure improvement in promoting road safety.
