Abstract

Traffic accidents are a crucial issue in most urban communities, resulting in injuries, deaths, and property damage. In Barangay Payatas A, there is an increase in the risk factors contributing to road accidents, as well as their implications for people's safety. The study aimed to evaluate the contributory factors to traffic crashes in the region, including road infrastructure, traffic congestion, driving behavior, and vehicle condition. It examines whether demographic characteristics such as age, sex, and length of residence affect respondents' evaluations of these attributes. The research design included a descriptive approach and purposive sampling. The primary data were collected through survey that administered to selected residents of Barangay Payatas A. The responses analyzed to statistical analysis, including frequency distributions, weighted means, and analysis of variance, to determine significant differences in demographic profiles. The respondents were profiled according to age, sex, and length of residency. Findings revealed that poor road infrastructure, congested streets, reckless driving, and inadequately maintained vehicles were perceived as the primary contributors to accidents. Problems such as illegal parking, informal terminals, flood-prone roads, lack of pedestrian lanes, insufficient traffic signals, and vehicle breakdowns further intensified risks. Results indicated that most respondents were female, aged 50 years old and above, and long-term residents of the barangay. Statistical analysis further showed that there was no significant difference in respondents’ assessments across demographic groups, suggesting that traffic safety problems are widely experienced across sectors of the community. The study underscores the importance of strict traffic law enforcement, public awareness, and sustainable road safety programs to reduce accidents and promote discipline among road users in Barangay Payatas A. The findings confirm that road infrastructure, traffic congestion, driving behavior, and vehicle condition significantly contribute to traffic accidents in the area. The absence of significant differences across demographic characteristics indicates that the identified problems are consistently observed regardless of age, sex, and length of residency. Overall, coordinated efforts among barangay officials, law enforcement agencies, and community members are essential in reducing traffic accidents and promoting a safer road environment.
