Abstract

Many students have difficulty understanding and appreciating Filipino literature because of limited interest and access to engaging materials. The Philippine Statistics Authority data from the Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey, stating that more than 18 million junior-high-school graduates were considered functionally illiterate, to emphasize reading-comprehension concerns. E-Kwento, a digital learning tool incorporating audiovisual storytelling, animation, and interactive activities, was developed to make the study of Filipino literature more engaging and meaningful and to support students’ interest, motivation, and comprehension. The study used an experimental research design to assess E-Kwento among 120 Grade 10 students at San Bartolome High School selected through cluster sampling. Seventy-one percent of respondents were aged 14–15, while 29% were aged 16–17. The sample included 66 male and 54 female students distributed across four sections. Mean ratings for interest (3.59), motivation (3.57), and comprehension (3.58) were interpreted as “Strongly Agree.” The pretest mean of 9.36 (SD = 2.80) increased to a posttest mean of 17.8 (SD = 2.33). The source reports t = 1.98 and p = 0.002, below the stated 0.05 significance level, indicating a significant pretest–posttest difference. Students remained participative and motivated despite minor challenges. The findings suggest that E-Kwento supported students’ interest, motivation, comprehension, and test performance in selected chapters of El Filibusterismo. The digital audiovisual approach provided a more interactive literature-learning experience.
