Abstract

Outdoor recreation supports leisure, community building, and appreciation of the environment, but inadequate waste-management practices can threaten sustainability. This study examined waste management at Mahogany Campsite and identified opportunities to create a more environmentally responsible recreational setting. It was guided by principles of sustainable outdoor recreation and emphasized the need for responsible behavior and management practices. The study used a quantitative approach and gathered information from campsite residents, staff members, and tourists through surveys and direct observation. Although respondents demonstrated awareness of proper waste disposal, implementation gaps were attributed to limited facilities, inconsistent rule enforcement, and a lack of engaging sustainability initiatives. Younger tourists were described as highly concerned about environmental stewardship but dissatisfied with inadequate waste-management systems. The findings emphasized the need to align infrastructure, education, and community involvement. The study recommended improving waste-disposal infrastructure, introducing incentive-based programs, tailoring educational campaigns to different age groups, and developing partnerships with local stakeholders. These measures may encourage shared responsibility and support long-term sustainability at Mahogany Campsite. Claims that the campsite could become a model for other communities require future implementation and outcome evaluation.
