Abstract

This study focused on strengthening community awareness through an information and dissemination program concerning violence against women and their children (VAWC). VAWC remains a serious concern in the Philippines despite Republic Act No. 9262, the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004. Cases may remain unreported because of fear, shame, limited knowledge of legal rights, and insufficient awareness of available barangay services. The study used a descriptive design with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Twenty-four respondents were selected through purposive sampling, including VAWC victims, barangay officials, local social workers, Philippine National Police Women and Children Protection Desk personnel, and nongovernmental-organization representatives. Data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire and informal interviews. Frequency, percentage, and weighted mean were used to analyze awareness and perceptions. Many respondents were aware of the Anti-VAWC law, but some did not fully understand its provisions, reporting procedures, or available support services. Barangay seminars, flyers, tarpaulins, and assembly announcements were considered helpful. Face-to-face seminars and community meetings were identified as the most effective information channels because residents could ask questions and clarify concerns. Information activities were not conducted regularly, and some residents remained uncertain about where to report cases. The study recommends strengthening the information and dissemination program through regular awareness seminars, school-based orientations, and social media campaigns. It also recommends increasing the visibility of the VAWC desk and simplifying informational materials. Continuing education and active community participation may support prevention and encourage earlier reporting.
