Abstract
This study aimed to develop a comprehensive and sustainable framework that would serve as a baseline model for profit-oriented firms planning strategic business expansion. Using LJN Enterprises Corporation—a family-owned fuel and LPG distributor in Quezon Province—as the focal case, the study gathered data to provide a basis for aligning profitability, sustainability, and competitiveness within the context of local market expansion. This study adopted a qualitative-descriptive research design, utilizing Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as the primary data-gathering method. Participants were drawn from various departments of LJN Enterprises, including management, operations, and marketing. The FGD guide was structured around the Resource-Based View (RBV), Porter’s Five Forces, and SWOT Analysis to extract insights regarding the firm’s internal resources, external challenges, and strategic opportunities. Data from the discussions were triangulated with company documents and secondary literature to construct an integrated framework supported by the Internal–External (IE) Matrix. The internal and external factors affecting the operations of LJN Enterprises were identified and analyzed to determine the firm’s readiness for expansion. The results revealed that LJN Enterprises possesses several strategic strengths, such as established community trust, efficient fuel distribution systems, and diversified product offerings, which provide a competitive advantage. However, the firm faces challenges including limited financial capacity, supplier dependency, and emerging substitutes such as electric mobility. The analysis emphasized that sustainable expansion depends on effectively leveraging internal resources while mitigating external pressures arising from competition and market volatility. Based on the findings, the proposed framework integrates the Resource-Based View, Porter’s Five Forces, SWOT Analysis, and the Internal–External Matrix to guide decision-making in market penetration, diversification, and long-term resource allocation. The study concludes that a structured, evidence-based business expansion framework enables LJN Enterprises and similar small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to achieve resilient, scalable, and sustainable growth. The study contributes theoretically by contextualizing strategic management tools for Philippine SMEs and practically by providing a model that aligns resource optimization, competitive positioning, and community-oriented business practices.
