Abstract

This study investigates the readiness of Philippine Army female soldiers to meet Physical Fitness Test PFT requirements following childbirth or miscarriage. Despite existing maternity and recovery policies, current reintegration protocols remain uniform and fail to account for physiological and psychological realities. Grounded in Life Course Theory LCT and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory EST, this research aims to construct a gender-sensitive framework for fitness readiness and reintegration. Using a mixed-methods design, the study surveyed 316 postpartum and post-miscarriage soldiers and conducted key informant interviews KIIs and focus group discussions FGDs with female soldiers, military medical officers, commanders, and subject-matter experts. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlations, and regression, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis to identify institutional gaps, lived experiences, and policy inconsistencies. Findings reveal that the standard recovery timelines, six to twelve months postpartum and one month post-miscarriage, are misaligned with actual recovery trajectories. Statistical results confirmed significant correlations between extended recovery time, leadership and unit support, and improved PFT performance. Qualitative findings revealed systemic gaps in policy implementation, inconsistent waivers, and gender-based stigma within unit culture. The study underscores that rigid, one-size-fits-all PFT standards increase injury risk, stress, and career stagnation among female soldiers. The proposed Gender-Sensitive PFT Readiness Framework advocates individualized recovery plans, leadership education, and tiered reintegration protocols to align institutional policy with medical evidence and gender equity. This framework promotes inclusive, evidence-based governance that enhances both operational readiness and the welfare of women in uniform, advancing gender-responsive security development within the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
