Abstract

The aesthetic development of Chinese oil painting reflects the historical evolution of Chinese artistic traditions and their deep connection to cultural identity. As cultural consciousness continues to expand in contemporary society, the integration of traditional and modern Chinese cultural elements has become a significant direction in oil painting creation. This study explores how symbols, imagery, thematic content, and artistic techniques facilitate the fusion of traditional heritage and modern cultural realities within contemporary Chinese oil painting. A quantitative-descriptive design was employed, analyzing survey data collected from 260 Fine Arts students at The Hohhot Institute for Nationalities. The findings highlight the importance of clearly representing traditional symbols, customs, and cultural motifs while simultaneously addressing modern themes such as urbanization, technological transformation, and social change. Techniques including vibrant color application, dynamic composition, and expressive brushwork were identified as essential in achieving a harmonious synthesis between tradition and modernity. Students recognized that effective cultural integration depends not only on subject matter but also on technical execution and emotional depth. The study concludes that successful integration of traditional and modern culture in contemporary oil painting requires both conceptual clarity and technical innovation. Recommendations include curriculum enhancement focusing on cultural reinterpretation, workshops on expressive color theory, and guided experimentation with diverse brushwork styles. Future research may further examine how innovative cultural reinterpretation strategies influence contemporary artistic identity and contribute to the evolving discourse on Chinese cultural expression in global art contexts.
